Wax Colour – Art
The bois from Essex have hit back after the success of their 2017 DIY Ep. The Chelmsford outfit have prided themselves on delivering a melancholic, punk, DIY ethos that has gained plaudits from all over the UK. The new EP ‘Art’ is exactly what it says on the tin, nonchalantly coasting through track by track with sheer brilliance.
The opening track ‘Art’ needs no introduction, atmospheric with a hint of desolation and a surprising uplifting element. It opens up a perfect artistic depiction of life as a millennial in modern day UK. Batteries offers an energetic outlay of what’s to be expected, it’s sheer beauty from start to end with a 70’s-esque riff that eludes the murky pools in which it originates from. The batteries definitely haven’t run out on this track and seem fully charged for the remaining tracks that follow.
The band continue with the theme of keeping ‘untitled tracks’ on their EPs. Untitled 4 & 5 perfectly structure the album and offer a perfect prelude that helps the album flow. The band almost use this as the glue that pulls together the other tracks in what can only be described as a portrait of pure eloquence.
‘Let the ash fall’ really shows how far the band have come in polishing up their sound. DIY was a breath of fresh air, however this track shows just how much the band have matured and tightened up their sound. The guitar riff and chord progression reek of something that’s been perfectly curated by it’s creators. Ocean shows the experimental side of the band , with a backing track showing they’re not solely reliant on their comfort instruments. It flows into what the band knows best; melodic riffs combined with Charlton’s distinctive vocals. He harmonises with his own vocals with genius.
This EP is stellar.

An experimental, melancholic masterpiece btw.
